Alleged drunk driver hits child riding his bike on the sidewalk

There are a number of reasons why drunk driving is prohibited in North Carolina and nationwide. Drivers who are impaired by alcohol have slower reaction times, poor decision-making skills and slower reflexes than a driver who is not drunk. These deteriorated physical and cognitive capabilities make these drivers a major threat on the road. When a person makes the decision to get behind the wheel after drinking too much, he or she is making the decision to put other people in serious danger.

Recently, a 12-year-old boy was the innocent victim of a man who was allegedly driving drunk. The young boy was riding his bike on the sidewalk in the early evening. He was off the road, just doing what young kids do when a man lost control of his vehicle and hit the young cyclist.

The man had reportedly had a couple beers before he got in his car. As he was driving along, he stated that he believed he hit a curb and got a flat tire and he just continued driving. In reality, the man had driven off the road, hopped over the curb and hit the child. The bicycle got stuck under the car's rear tire and was sparking as it continued to be dragged by the driver. Still, the driver had no awareness that he had just hit a young boy.

The victim was brought to the hospital where he was treated for a broken leg. Luckily, this was the extent of his injuries. In other drunk driving accidents, victims can suffer life-changing or fatal injuries. In this case, the police were able to track down the driver and arrested him. He is facing charges of driving under the influence, leaving the scene of the accident and driving under suspension.
